Practical Biblical Wisdom for Living
Love after Love
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
Healing After Covert Narcissist Abuse: Embrace Self-Love and Rediscovery
“Love After Love” by Derek Walcott is a poem about rediscovering and loving oneself after a relationship ends. It emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and self-love. The Bible also teaches us about the significance of loving and respecting ourselves. In Mark 12:31 (NIV), Jesus commands, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This verse implies that we must first love ourselves to genuinely love others.
Covert narcissists can leave us feeling empty and drained due to their manipulative and deceitful behavior. They often erode our self-esteem and create a sense of dependency, leaving us emotionally depleted. The journey to heal from their harm involves turning inward and embracing self-love. The poem’s message of self-reconciliation aligns with Psalm 139:14 (NIV), which says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse reminds us of our inherent worth and the importance of self-appreciation.
Additionally, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) encourages us to honor ourselves: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” As Walcott suggests in his poem, we can find healing and peace by turning inward and embracing who we are. The Bible supports this journey, teaching us that self-love and respect are essential for a fulfilling life and for loving others genuinely.
Through the process of self-discovery and self-care, we can recover from the emotional wounds inflicted by covert narcissists. By leaning on the teachings of the Bible and embracing the truth of our worth, we can rebuild our sense of self and move forward with renewed strength and hope.
Romans 8:11
11 And if the Spirit of the One having raised up Jesus out from the dead dwells in you, the One having raised up Christ Jesus out from the dead also will give life to your mortal bodies, on account of His Spirit dwelling in you. KJV
