The Great Falling Away-When Love “Waxes Cold”

Introduction

A deep cold has settled over America, not in the weather, but in our hearts. We’re living in a time where you can feel something changing in the world. People are colder, quicker to judge, quicker to harm, slower to care. You see it in the news, in our neighborhoods, even in the way strangers look at each other. Someone tries to help, and instead of being met with gratitude, they’re treated like a threat. When the systems that are supposed to protect us end up hurting us, it shows how far we’ve drifted from what’s right. The Bible warned us this season would come: “Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” These events aren’t random; they’re signs that we’re living in the age the Scriptures call the falling away, a time when hearts grow hard, and love grows thin.

We Are Living in the Falling Away

You don’t need a theology degree to see it. The world feels different. Hearts feel harder. People feel more distant. The Bible describes this season clearly:

  • 2 Timothy 3 says people would become selfish, proud, ungrateful, disrespectful, and without natural affection.
  • Matthew 24 says love would grow cold as sin increases.
  • 2 Thessalonians 2 talks about a “falling away” before the end.
These scriptures read like they were written for today.

You Can See the Falling Away Everywhere

  1. Trust Has Broken Down
People don’t trust institutions anymore, not government, not media, not corporations, not even each other. And honestly, many feel they have reasons. Decisions feel confusing. Information feels inconsistent. People feel misled, unheard, or pushed aside. This loss of trust didn’t happen overnight; it built up over years of disappointment.
  2. COVID Exposed the Cracks
Without taking sides, it’s clear that the COVID years changed us.
    People felt:
  • isolated
  • divided
  • restricted
  • confused
  • unheard
  • and in some cases, violated
Families were separated. Communities were torn apart.
Some felt their rights were ignored. Others felt their fears were dismissed.
No matter what someone believed, the result was the same: division and coldness.
  1. Families Are Falling Apart
The Bible says in Malachi 4:6 that God turns the hearts of parents and children toward each other. But today:
  • families barely talk
  • kids disrespect parents
  • Parents are overwhelmed
  • Marriages are breaking up
  • People feel alone even in their own homes
This is spiritual, not just social.
  1. Respect for Authority Has Faded
Teachers, elders, parents, pastors — people who used to be honored — are now ignored or attacked.
This lines up with 2 Timothy 3, which says people would be “disobedient to parents” and “fierce.”
  2. Every Industry Shows Signs of Decay
You can see the falling away in:
  • business (greed and corruption)
  • healthcare (burnout and distrust)
  • education (chaos and disrespect)
  • media (division and confusion)
  • government (conflict and frustration)
  • communities (violence and fear)
  • even churches (division and compromise)
It feels like every pillar of society is shaking.

So What Do We Do? The Hope We Hold as Believers

Even in these dark days, God has not left us without hope.

  1. God Told Us This Would Happen
Jesus didn’t warn us to scare us; He warned us so we wouldn’t be surprised.
    We are not lost.
    We are not abandoned.
We are living in the days the Bible described.
  2. God Protects His People in Times of Shaking
Throughout history, God has always kept a faithful remnant:
  • Noah
  • Daniel
  • Elijah
  • The early church
God has never failed His people, and He won’t start now.

Our Hope Is Not in Systems — It’s in Christ

  1. Our Hope Is Not in Systems — It’s in Christ
    Governments may fail.
    Institutions may fail.
    People may fail.
    But God does not fail.
Psalm 46 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  2. We Must Keep Our Hearts Warm
Even when the world grows cold, we are called to:
  • love
  • forgive
  • stay humble
  • stay prayerful
  • stay grounded in truth
  • stay filled with the Holy Spirit
We are called to be light in the darkness.
  1. This Is Not the End — It’s the Beginning of Awakening
When the world grows cold, God’s fire becomes more visible.
When people lose trust in systems, they start searching for the truth.
    When everything shakes, hearts open.
This is a moment for believers to rise, not retreat.

Our Hope

When the world feels dark and unsafe, it helps to remember that God has rescued His people from dark places before. Think about Lot and his family in Sodom. They were surrounded by violence, corruption, and a society that had completely lost its way. They felt trapped in a place where right and wrong no longer mattered. But God didn’t leave them there. He sent angels, real help, real protection, real guidance, and He led them out before destruction came.

That same God is still with us today. The Bible tells us in Psalm 46:1 that He is “a very present help in trouble.” Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” And Isaiah 9:7 promises that His kingdom will be built on justice and truth forever. People may fail us. Systems may fail us. Society may fall apart. But Christ never fails.

So even as love grows cold and the world feels like it’s slipping into its own kind of Sodom, we hold onto this hope: God knows how to rescue His people. He knows how to guide us, protect us, and lead us into a future where He is not broken institutions is our leader. A future built on truth, justice, mercy, and unfailing love. And just like Lot, we won’t walk out alone. God Himself will bring us through.
