When the World Teaches Our Values Instead of God-Part 1

Introduction
Something is quietly happening inside many Christian homes that is affecting Christian home values, and most believers do not even realize it.
Today, many followers of Christ are unaware that their spiritual health is quietly at risk. What is happening inside our homes is so subtle, so woven into everyday life, that the average Christian often does not see it happening. Slowly and almost invisibly, the world’s influence is replacing God’s.
Without realizing it, many believers are drifting.
They still believe in Christ. They still identify as followers of Him. Yet the patterns shaping their lives, their priorities, their relationships, the way they raise their children, and even the values that guide their homes, are increasingly being formed by the surrounding culture rather than by the word of God.
The most troubling part is that this shift rarely feels like rebellion. It feels normal.
The voices of modern culture speak constantly through entertainment, advertising, social media, and endless digital distractions. These voices teach us what to value, how to live, what success looks like, and even how to define relationships and family life. Over time, if we are not careful, those voices quietly become the loudest teachers in our homes.
And when that happens, something deeply concerning begins to unfold: believers who sincerely love Christ may slowly begin to walk away from His wisdom and protection without even realizing it.
Scripture warns us about this danger:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
This series is not written to condemn anyone. It is written to bring things into the light. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do for one another is pause and honestly examine what is shaping our lives.
Because the question before us is not a small one.
Who is teaching our homes today?
Is it the voice of God?
Or has the voice of the world quietly taken His place?
A Quiet Shift Inside the Christian Home
In generations past, the home was understood to be the place where values were taught and character was formed. Parents took seriously the responsibility of guiding their children, not only in practical matters of life, but also in the wisdom of God.
Today, however, something subtle has changed.
Many homes that call themselves Christian are being shaped more by the surrounding culture than by Scripture. The voices filling our homes are no longer primarily those of parents, pastors, or the Word of God. Instead, they often come through glowing screens, constant entertainment, and a culture that never stops telling us what to value.
Children learn about relationships from television and social media before they ever hear what Scripture says. Families sit in the same room, yet live in separate digital worlds. Meals once shared around a table are replaced by hurried schedules, distractions, and devices.
None of this happens overnight. It happens quietly.
Little by little, the world begins to take the role of teacher.
And when the world becomes the teacher, its lessons begin to shape everything, from how we view family and relationships to how we measure success, happiness, and even identity itself.
Scripture warned believers that this kind of influence would always be present.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
The question is not whether the world is teaching. It always has been.
The real question is whether Christian homes still recognize when its voice has become louder than God’s.
When Right and Wrong Become Confused
One of the most troubling signs of cultural influence is the gradual confusion of right and wrong. Ideas and behaviors that once caused believers to pause are now often accepted without question, simply because they have become common.
Scripture warned that such confusion would come.
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil; who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” — Isaiah 5:20
This warning was not written only for ancient times. It speaks directly to every generation that must navigate the pressures of the surrounding culture.
When certain behaviors are repeated often enough in entertainment, celebrated on social media, or normalized through constant exposure, they can begin to appear harmless. Over time, what once seemed clearly outside the boundaries of biblical wisdom can slowly begin to look ordinary.
This is how cultural influence works. It rarely arrives openly announcing that it intends to challenge God’s design. Instead, it presents new ideas gradually, often wrapped in language that sounds appealing, compassionate, or progressive.
Little by little, the lines become blurred.
What once seemed questionable begins to appear acceptable. What once seemed acceptable may even begin to be celebrated. Meanwhile, those who still hold to biblical values can sometimes feel outdated or unreasonable.
For Christian families, this creates a serious challenge. If we are not careful, the standards guiding our homes may slowly shift without us ever noticing.
And when that happens, the question we must ask ourselves becomes even more important.
Are our values being shaped by the timeless wisdom of Scripture, or by the constantly changing standards of the world around us?
Where Cultural Influence Enters the Home
Cultural influence rarely announces itself. It enters quietly, often through the ordinary routines of daily life.
It enters through the entertainment we watch, the messages we scroll past on social media, and the values that are constantly promoted through advertising and popular culture. These influences shape how we think about relationships, identity, success, and happiness.
Over time, these messages begin to affect the atmosphere of the home itself. They influence how children understand relationships, how families spend their time, and the priorities that guide everyday decisions.
When these influences go unexamined, they can slowly redefine what seems normal within a Christian home.
In the articles that follow, we will look more closely at several areas where this cultural influence often appears. These topics are not discussed to condemn anyone, but to bring clarity so that Christian families can more intentionally shape their homes according to the wisdom of God.
Because the question facing every believer today is not whether the world is teaching. The world has always done that.
The real question is this:
Will our homes be shaped by the voice of the world, or by the voice of God?
